These are just a few points you should consider when determining your selection of a breeder for your labrador retriever puppy.
Look at how long the breeder has been in business. This can be done by skimming social media pages or their website. Look for a good reputation and history of doing business.
Long-time breeders will often have waiting lists of repeat customers. At Brandywine, we have raised labs for over 20 years and officially been in business over 7 years.
Reputable breeders have the goal of producing healthy, happy dogs that meet the breed standard. They should avoid breeding just for traits (such as color) while not supporting the overall health and wellness and breed standard of the dog. At Brandywine, we do our best to support the labrador retriever breed standard.
Breeders should be ensuring their dogs are as healthy as possible. At Brandywine, we ensure our labs pass genetic and OFA testing. We have an overall health and wellness program.
Ensure you have the ability to meet the dam or sire. Look at the overall health and temperament of the dam and sire. The parents should appear comfortable and settled. Their pups should have the same demeanor, as well as being clean and energetic. At Brandywine, the dam and/or sire are available for you to meet and have interaction.
You should receive lots of questions about previous and current dogs, where the puppy will live, and how it will be trained and socialized. At Brandywine, we prefer phone calls with our new families. We also ask that our Contact Form be completed which helps us learn more about you.
The breeder should be very knowledgeable about the breeds they raise. They should be able to answer questions such as the dog’s potential size, recommended feeding schedules, exercise needs, etc. At Brandywine, we are always available for questions. This also includes after you have taken your puppy home.
The breeder should have a good relationship with a respected veterinarian who examines each pup and provides immunizations. The breeder should readily provide a complete medical record on each pup. Our vet is available as a reference. We provide a written medical vet history for each puppy.
The breeder should provide a written contract with a guarantee of health allowing time for an examination by a veterinarian of your choice. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back or provide compensation. We provide both a health and genetic guarantee.
