FAQs

1.  What is the difference between AKC Full Registration or AKC Limited Registration

Limited AKC Registration or "pet only" registration.

A limited registration is when a purchased dog (male or female) is registered with the AKC but any litters given by that dog will not be eligible to be registered with the AKC.

  • A limited registration certificate is white with an orange border.
  • Dogs are mostly sold to pet families and not used for AKC breeding. A benefit to families is that Limited AKC dogs are typically offered at a lower price,
  • Dogs can compete in many AKC-sponsored events such as Obedience, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, and Agility, but not in the breeding conformation classes.

Full AKC Registration

Full registration is when a purchased dog (male or female) is registered with the AKC and any litters given (bred to another Full registration dog) by that dog are eligible to be registered with the AKC.

  • A full registration certificate is white with a purple border.
  • Dogs are mostly sold to families that show in AKC breed or conformation shows or plan to reproduce in the future. Full AKC puppies typically cost $500 to $1000 more.
  • Dogs can compete and take part in confirmation and championship dog shows.

2. Do you remove dew claws?

First, what are dew claws?  Dewclaws are basically the thumbs and big toes of the dog. A dewclaw for a labrador is attached by bone to a dog’s front foot and has a definite purpose. When dogs run, their front feet often bend to the point where their dewclaws contact the ground. When running at high speeds, these dewclaws provide extra traction and stabilization.

We have chosen to no longer remove dew claws. The argument to remove is that In rare cases, a dog’s dewclaw can be injured or cause the dog serious issues. But serious cases are very rare and we believe the benefit of the dew claw outweighs the slight risk. In fact, sometimes dogs with their front dew claws removed will develop arthritis at the carpal joint.  We have provided several links below if you would like further information.
